Numerical tests of dynamical friction in gravitational inhomogeneous systems

چکیده
In this paper, I test by numerical simulations the results of Del Popolo & Gambera (1998), dealing with the extension of Chandrasekhar and von Neumann’s analysis of the statistics of the gravitational field to systems in which particles (e.g. stars, galaxies) are inhomogeneously distributed. The paper is an extension of that of Ahmad & Cohen (1974), in which the authors tested some results of the stochastic theory of dynamical friction developed by Chandrasekhar & von Neumann (1943) in the case of homogeneous gravitational systems. It is also a continuation of the work developed in Del Popolo (1996a,b), which extended the results of Ahmad & Cohen (1973), (dealing with the study of the probability distribution of the stochastic force in homogeneous gravitational systems) to inhomogeneous gravitational systems. Similarly to what was done by Ahmad & Cohen (1974) in the case of homogeneous systems, I test, by means of the evolution of an inhomogeneous system of particles, that the theoretical rate of force fluctuation dF/dt describes correctly the experimental one, I find that the stochastic force distribution obtained for the evolved system is in good agreement with the Del Popolo & Gambera (1998) theory. Moreover, in an inhomogeneous background the friction force is actually enhanced relative to the homogeneous case.

On the nature of gravitational forces
In this paper I show how the statistics of the gravitational field is changed when the system is characterized by a non-uniform distribution of particles. I show how the distribution functions W (F) and W (F, dF/dt), giving the joint probability that a test particle is subject to a force F and an associated rate of change of F given by dF/dt, are modified by inhomogeneity. Then I calculate the ...
متن کاملGravitational Heating Helps Make Massive Galaxies Red and Dead
We study the thermal formation history of four simulated galaxies that were shown in Naab et al. (2007) to reproduce a number of observed properties of elliptical galaxies. The temperature of the gas in the galaxies is steadily increasing with decreasing redshift, although much of the gas has a cooling time shorter than the Hubble time. The gas is being heated and kept hot by gravitational heat...
متن کاملPROJECTED DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS AND OPTIMIZATION PROBLEMS
We establish a relationship between general constrained pseudoconvex optimization problems and globally projected dynamical systems. A corresponding novel neural network model, which is globally convergent and stable in the sense of Lyapunov, is proposed. Both theoretical and numerical approaches are considered. Numerical simulations for three constrained nonlinear optimization problems a...
متن کاملNonlinear Dynamic Modeling and Hysteresis Analysis of Aerospace Hydro - dynamical Control Valves
A new procedure for deriving nonlinear mathematical modeling for a specific class of aerospace hydro - mechanical control valves is presented. The effects of friction on the dynamic behavior of these types of valves along with the experimental verifictions are also given. The modeling approach is based on the combination of the following three tasks: decomposition of the valve into simple speci...
متن کاملLarge scale inhomogeneity and local dynamical friction
We investigate the effect of a density gradient on Chandrasekhar’s dynamical friction formula based on the method of 2-body encounters in the local approximation. We apply these generalizations to the orbit evolution of satellite galaxies in Dark Matter haloes. We find from the analysis that the main influence occurs through a position-dependent maximum impact parameter in the Coulomb logarithm...
